Complex Troubleshooting & System Diagnostics

Complex HVAC Troubleshooting & System Diagnostics

Methodical diagnostics for commercial HVAC and mechanical problems that keep coming back, show up intermittently or haven't been resolved by earlier service calls.

Why Problems Keep Coming Back

Some HVAC problems resist the usual fixes. The unit runs fine when the technician arrives, the alarm clears after a reset, or the same part fails again a month after it was replaced.

Recurring failures usually have an underlying cause that a parts swap doesn't address: an electrical supply issue, an airflow restriction, a refrigerant circuit problem, a control sequence working against the equipment, or a mechanical issue upstream or downstream of the unit that keeps failing. Until that cause is identified, the cycle continues and repeat service calls add up.

Problems We Diagnose

We take on the problems that don't have an obvious answer:

Intermittent Failures & Nuisance Trips

Faults that appear only under certain loads, temperatures or times of day.

Recurring Component Failures

Compressors, motors, contactors, boards or igniters that keep failing.

Control & Communication Faults

Lost communication, unstable sensors, wrong setpoints or sequences that fight each other.

Capacity & Performance Problems

Equipment that runs but can't keep up, or zones that won't hold temperature.

Electrical Problems

Voltage imbalance, failing connections, VFD faults and control power issues.

Hydronic & Airflow Issues

Flow, pressure and temperature problems in water loops, plus static pressure, damper and economizer faults.

Signs You Need Deeper Diagnostics

Consider a diagnostic visit when you notice:

  • The same equipment has needed several service calls for the same symptom
  • Parts have been replaced but the problem returned
  • Alarms clear after a reset and then come back
  • Comfort complaints with no obvious equipment failure
  • Energy use or run time rising without explanation
  • Equipment from different systems appears to be fighting each other

Our Diagnostic Process

1. Gather the history. Service records, alarm and trend data, when the problem occurs and what has already been tried.

2. Observe the system under real conditions. Pressures, temperatures, amperage, voltage and control signals, ideally while the problem is happening.

3. Isolate the cause. Systematically test electrical, mechanical, refrigerant, airflow, water-side and control functions to narrow down the fault.

4. Explain and recommend. A clear account of what we found, what it means and the practical options to correct it.

  • Fewer repeat service calls
  • Repairs targeted at the real problem
  • Better information for repair-or-replace decisions
  • Improved reliability and system performance
  • Diagnostics across RTUs, split and VRF systems, chillers, boilers, air handlers, pumps, VFDs and BAS/BMS

Get to the Root of the Problem

Describe the symptoms, the equipment involved and what has already been tried. We'll follow up to discuss a diagnostic visit.
